The original function of dog's pedigree is found in breeding and in identifying an individual dog. Issuing institution must be reliable for proper identification of individual dog and an internal record, or specifically a pedigree record showing ancestors up to four generations, must be available for breeding. In case of Sapsarees, a tremendous amount of internal records of Sapsaree pedigree has been accumulated during the past 20 years. The pedigree maintenance can become more reliable once a pedigree is issued through the database of these documents.
In case of Sapsarees, a visible genetic fingerprinting test data of the parents and their puppies have been implemented in the pedigree for identity-purpose. With a single page of the pedigree, one can identify the individual dog as well as its parents. A single blood drop or a hair from muzzle is enough to check whether the information on the pedigree is consistent with the dog's actual identity within 24 hours. The new advanced genetic engineering techniques are cost-efficiently fulfilling so many tasks that were unimaginable 2-3 years ago. Pedigrees containing internal records and information for successful identification of an individual Sapsaree are being issued for all transferred pure-bred Sapsarees of Gyeongsan.
For identity purpose, characteristic number is tattooed on the Sapsaree's left ear. This makes discrimination possible with naked-eye. Starting from 2004, a microchip has been inserted underneath the skin of nape (back of neck) for every registered Sapsaree. The microchip semi-permanently allows recognition of the individual dog. Along with this great equipment, the genetic fingerprinting is applied in the Sapsaree pedigree for identity-confirmation. Altogether, the purity of Sapsaree pedigree is being throughly managed.
